Polk County Courthouse Elevators Are Being Updated

　　BARTOW | Going up and going down will soon be faster and more reliable at the Polk County Courthouse.
　　A project began Tuesday to update courthouse elevators. The Polk County Commission approved a $695,810 bid for the project on Nov. 16.
　　Chief Judge J. David Langford said the two most pressing renovations for the courthouse are updating the elevators and getting more parking.
　　"I know we need parking, but the elevators are really a life safety issue," he said.
　　Frequent courthouse visitors have experienced how the six elevators for the general public are prone to problems.
　　People have complained about waiting for long periods of time to catch one. They've broken down, and people have gotten stuck on them.
　　The elevator cars are supposed to travel at an estimated 500 feet per minute.
　　Last year, testing showed the cars were performing in many cases at much slower speeds, records show. The slowest car traveled downward at a speed of 270 feet per minute.
　　There is also a private elevator for the judges that will be fixed.
　　The judge's elevator will be the last one repaired because the public elevators get the most use, Langford said.
　　"The judicial elevator breaks down from time to time also, but the public elevators needed to be done first," he said.
　　David R. Peach, the county's facilities management director, said only one elevator will be down at a time.
　　The elevators were installed in 1987, and the electronics need to be upgraded, he said.
　　County records state the repairs are expected to cut down on annual costs for maintenance and emergency repairs. In addition, the elevators should use less energy.
　　Elevator travelers might notice that the buttons will look different.
　　The female voice proclaiming "going up" or "going down" could also change, and there is the possibility that it could be announced in Spanish.
