Elevator park opens for tours
The grain elevator used to dominate the Alberta countryside a century ago. Now the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert (AHF) is working hard to save the last two local elevators at St. Albert Grain Elevator (SAGE) Park.
The two elevators were built in 1903 and 1906 respectively by the Alberta Wheat Pool, but both have endured a century of wear and tear. Planking inside and out has rotted away, and both buildings are not up to current fire codes. As well, the 1903 elevator was repainted red a few decades back, and historical restorers are hoping to have it back to its green Alberta Wheat Pool colour by July 1.
