ESCALATOR SAFETY CAMPAIGN STARTS AT TOKYO RAIL STATION
With the year-end and New Year’s travel season approaching, East Japan Railway (JR East) has launched a campaign to promote the safe and efficient use of escalators at its Tokyo Station, NHK reports. JR East has placed posters around the station urging passengers to stand still on escalators, and security guards wearing bright vests are making personal appeals to commuters, asking them to stand two abreast and not walk on escalators, as opposed to the common practice of some standing to one side of the escalator to allow others to walk through. Illustrations of people standing in two lines and holding onto the escalator's handrails have been placed on the floors in front of the escalators, and walls and handrails carry messages saying such things as "Please do not walk." While many people continued to walk during the first day of the campaign, JR East officials said that some stopped. The campaign will last until February 1, 2019.
