　　A petition signed by at least 750 people has been launched by elected officials in Uptown NYC demanding the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) provide free shuttle buses during the time elevators at five subway stations — including some of the deepest in the city, at Washington Heights and Inwood — are being replaced, Patch reports. Due to the age and condition of the equipment, work is expected to take up to one year at each station. Politicians say the lack of elevator access will prevent many commuters from using the subway, and has a disproportionate effect on disabled people, elderly riders and those traveling with young children. MTA President Andy Byford has called the elevator work, which coincides with security, communications and alarm-system upgrades, “long overdue.” A community meeting was scheduled to take place on July 25.
