MAN DIES IN RESIDENTIAL ELEVATOR MISHAP IN MANHATTAN
A 30-year-old man died on August 22 in an elevator incident at the 23-story tower where he lived in Manhattan’s Kips Bay neighborhood, various news outlets, including the New York Times, report. The two elevators serving Manhattan Promenade had a history of problems, and the property was fined recently for unsafe elevator conditions. Residents described “scary” conditions with cars wobbling and stopping between floors, and doors failing to close properly. Security footage of the fatal incident shows two people stepping out of the elevator when it stopped shortly before 8:30 a.m., then the man putting out his hand to try to stop the door from closing. He then tried to exit the door as the elevator kept going down, “like jumping out of a car if it’s still moving,” a building employee said. NYC has the most elevators in the country — more than 70,000 — and fatal accidents are rare. But the incident prompted lawmakers to call for greater elevator safety measures. A bill passed by the state legislature in June that would raise licensing standards for mechanics and create a state Elevator Safety and Standards Boards, which is awaiting Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signature.
