TENNESSEE HAS IMPROVED ON DELINQUENT INSPECTIONS

Nine months after news reports that Tennessee was behind on elevator inspections, a followup investigation shows the situation has improved, though officials are still trying to catch up, WSMV News4 reports. State law calls for all elevators to be inspected at least twice a year, but a state comptroller's audit of 50 inspections conducted between July 2014 and March 2018 found that the inspections were undertaken an average of 74 days late. Worse, a November 2018 audit discovered that some elevators in the Mid-State region had gone without safety inspections for years. The state has since taken steps to catch up, including implementing a new computer system to make the inspection system more efficient overall and in identifying delinquent inspections, rearranging inspection routes and hiring four additional inspectors for the Nashville area. State officials said they are nearly current with inspections.
