Brooke
The slow response team: Six policemen get stuck in lift on way to job... and have to be rescued by firemen
Police called to disturbance at a tower block had to be rescued by firemen, after they got stuck in a lift.
Six burly officers piled into the lift at the 13-storey Brooke House in Basildon, Essex, but their combined weight was too much for it.
The men, who have been dubbed the 'slow response team', were trapped for 17 minutes before being rescued.
A fire brigade source said: 'They had gone to make an arrest or deal with something when all six of them decided to get into the same lift.
'It was the combined weight of all of them that caused it to get stuck.
'The crews had to use a lift key to get them out.'
Police from the Basildon neighbourhood support team had been called to the 1960s Grade II listed Brooke House in the town centre following reports of a disturbance.
They began their lift journey up the 13-storey building, but soon came to a halt because they were too heavy.
A spokeswoman for Basildon police said: 'Police were called at 11.05pm following reports of a disturbance at Brooke House.
'Whilst on their way to the scene officers got stuck in a lift for a short time and were assisted by the fire brigade who helped them get out.
'It transpired that no crime, disturbance or breach of the peace had been committed.'
The incident on Wednesday night is not the first time there has been a breakdown of the Brooke House lift.
In 2009 fire crews had to free seven people after they got stuck in the tower block lifts.
And, back in July 2005, residents in the block claimed victory after Basildon Council revealed it would spend £50,000 improving the lifts following a catalogue of incidents.
Residents claimed lifts in the landmark building - which stands at 160ft tall - were breaking down every week leaving those on the highest floor having to climb 26 flights of stairs to get home.
One mum and her daughter were also trapped in the lift for 15 minutes after it malfunctioned and plummeted six floors.
