Escalator Victim's Organs Donated To 4 Patients
BOSTON -- The family of the 4-year-old boy who died in an escalator accident at the Auburn Mall has donated four of his organs to patients in need of transplants, a family spokesman said.
Mark DiBona, of Dudley, was shopping with family earlier this month at the Auburn Mall when he fell from an escalator on the second floor of the Sears store. He died the next day at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.
Police said Mark grabbed the escalator's moving railing with both hands and flew off. He landed on a first-floor store display case and suffered a serious head injury.
The heart donation was announced during his funeral mass Saturday, the Rev. Charles R. LeBlanc said.
“Mark’s heart has been given to an 8-year-old boy,” the pastor told the Worcester Telegram. “The family decided just to do it to continue Mark’s legacy."
Mark's liver was donated to a 6-month-old baby and his kidneys were donated to two others.
The identity of the recipients was not disclosed.
Two escalator inspectors were suspended for their failure to note the gap in the escalator that allowed the young boy to fall.
