'Focus on energy-efficient systems'
With the country's growing real estate needs contributing to high rise structures, Kone Corporation, the 5 billion global elevator and escalator manufacturer, is betting big on the Asia-Pacific market. It regards India as its second largest market in the region after China and is consciously focusing on offering energy efficient systems. It recently won an order to install 10 MiniSpace elevators that travel at a speed of 7 metres per second-the fastest in India-at Palais Royale, the 75-storey luxury building at Mumbai's Worli.
The Kone Corporation president and CEO, Matti Alahuhta, who was named the European Businessman of the Year in 2009, was in Mumbai last week on a whistlestop tour and took time out for an interview with TOI. Excerpts.
What are the trends that you see in the construction industry globally and how do they compare with the trends in India?
Development is positive in Asia-Pacific. Due to the recession post 2008, construction has dropped to a good extent in most countries of North America and Europe. The residential segment, however, is looking good in Central and Northern Europe though it is still low in North America. On the other hand, Canada and Mexico are looking up. So far as Asia-Pacific and, more specifically, India and China are concerned, we believe the market is going to escalate in the next 20 years. And the main reason is rapid urbanization and demographic change. In 2001, the urban population was 290 million. In 2010, it has touched 350 million and by 2030 it is expected to touch 590 million.
How big a market is China for you? How does India compare to China?
These two markets are very important for our business. We have grown nicely in China in the past five years and are currently ranked number four among the total four companies in this business. In India we are number two. This is a market where our equipment business has been doing better. As a market leader we have a strong local presence as well as competence. We have 2,500 employees at out Chennai plant, of them 1,000 are engineers. The Indian operations' contribution to the global engineering, research and development activities is ever increasing. Kone took over the operations in 1990 from Chennai-based Best and Crompton Lifts.
What's your share of the market and how have you managed to take shares away from some of the other major players like Otis?
In the past six years we have developed customer-focused product services, sourcing and production network. In late 2008, when the economy was doing badly, we designed and invested in developing leadership capability.
For example, we have this supervisory programme where the supervisors are trained in motivation skills, sales management programme to get closer to customers and support staff.
Does the mantle of European manager of the year bring more pressure on you as a CEO? What's your vision for the group? How do you attract talent to the company considering it's exactly not the most glamorous industry?
It's a good recognition not to an individual but to the entire team. Growing urbanization gives us immense scope to grow and more so as the city architecture increases upwards. Apart from safety, urbanization provides ample opportunity to modernize and develop environment-friendly elevators. We have a nice breadth to our activity and vertical structures are the preferred architectural medium. We have consciously decided to focus on offering energy-efficient systems. Buildings consume 40% of the world's energy and elevators account for up to 10% of a building's energy needs.
We have seven R&D centres globally, where 700 people are deployed and around 300 of them are in India. We have been pioneering regenerative solutions that can recover maximum energy consumed by elevators.
