United Technologies to report 1Q earnings
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- United Technologies Corp., which manufactures elevators, jet engines, heating and cooling equipment and other aerospace and building systems products, reports its first quarter earnings results Wednesday before the stock market opens.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Investors will look at whether the Hartford-based conglomerate continues to make gains in its Carrier heating and air conditioning products business and its Otis elevator operations. United Technologies last month raised the lower end of its profit guidance for 2011, saying businesses such as elevators, commercial plane spare parts and heating and air conditioning systems are doing well in the economic recovery.
Improvements were already seen last year. In its 2010 fourth quarter, United Technologies said stronger results from Carrier and its airline commercial spare parts business for jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney helped boost profit. But Chief Financial Officer Greg Hayes said sales were still below 2008 levels.
United Technologies announced last week it would raise its quarterly dividend to 48 cents a share, up from 42.5 cents. Edward Jones analyst Matt Collins said in a note to investors that with the higher dividend, the company will pay slightly more than one-third of its 2011 earnings to shareholders in a dividend, "leaving ample room for future dividend growth and further reinvestment in the business."
United Technologies is in position to benefit from increased spending on global infrastructure and energy efficiency, he said.
WHY IT MATTERS: Results could show whether Pratt & Whitney is capitalizing on improvements in the airline industry and if Carrier is benefiting from strengthening commercial and residential real estate markets. United Technologies has consistently boosted its bottom line with restructuring, but revenue rose for the first time in nearly two years only in last year's second quarter.
WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts expect United Technologies to earn $1.07 a share in the first quarter on revenue of $12.8 billion.
LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: United Technologies earned 93 cents per share in the first quarter of 2010 on revenue of $12.1 billion.
