Newspaper deliveryman falls 25 feet down elevator shaft on Upper West Side, in stable condition
A newspaper deliveryman took a freak spill down the elevator shaft of an Upper West Side high-rise Thursday morning when he tried to get out of a stuck lift.
The 40-year-old man fell about 25 feet around 5:30 a.m. after the elevator cab stopped between the first floor and lobby of The Bel Canto Condominium on Broadway between W. 67th and 68th streets.
"He tried to pry open the door. I could see his legs up to his waist," said doorman Pat Riley, who rushed to help. "I saw him jump out. He tried to grab himself and get his balance but he couldn't and he fell down to the pit in the basement."
The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times deliveryman toppled into the basement pit at the bottom of the elevator shaft and screamed for help.
"He was moaning and in pain," Riley said. "Once I saw him below, I knew right away to call 911."
The man was rushed to Weill-Cornell Hospital and is in stable condition.
"He took off 10 years of my life," Riley said. "I am still shaking. Right in front of my eyes he went down. Whoof.
"Imagine if this happened on a higher floor? He'd be dead," he said.
