State inspectors handle the inspections for public buildings through Maryland. But when we’re talking about the elevators in private buildings, that job falls to third party inspectors.
Paul Cole has more ups and downs than most people. He's spent 25 years of his life installing, maintaining and inspecting elevators. He explains, “You have to take it seriously. The public is riding this elevator and if I'm inspecting it obviously I want to do a good job because I want to make sure whoever is riding is going to be safe."
Cole checks the actual controls of the elevator, hidden in a nearby room. Once he's checked the controls, he moves onto the car itself and all its moving parts, “As the door is closing, I'm going to check door closing force. I'm going to stall the door, push my gauge
