Freight elevators: not for public use
Escalator and elevator accidents claim nearly 30 lives and injure about 17,000 people yearly in the United States, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Freight elevators are found in office and residential buildings across the country. As with other kinds of elevators, it is imperative they meet specific requirements and regulations. It is also essential that they pass frequent inspection to ensure their safe use.
Freight elevators carry objects more often than people (Though people are often inside the freight), but are usually larger and better able to carry heavy objects than passenger elevators. However, they are not required to maintain various ASME A17.1 code requirements, due to the fact that they are deemed "not for public use."The lack of these code requirements, coupled with their steady use, makes them a likelier spot for an accident than a typical passenger elevator.
