Otis Unveils Forward-Thinking Elevator Design and Functionality at MIPIM
CANNES, March 12, 2015—Otis is rethinking the elevator experience with new interior designs and smart functionality that reinforce the elevator cab’s role as a valuable room in the core of the building. Otis, the world’s largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
With the new elevator design concepts unveiled by Otis during MIPIM, the international real estate show for professionals, elevator interior design and connectivity become the focus of the elevator experience. The elevators provide continuity with the architecture and design of a building, a shared space transporting passengers and providing an experience that contributes to building occupants’ quality of life.
"Elevators are at the heart of buildings,” said Pierre Dejoux, president, Otis Europe. “They contribute to what we experience in an office or hotel, yet are often overlooked when it comes to overall building design. More than a transportation space, the elevator is, like the lobby, a mark of a luxury building. With this capsule collection, we sought to make this centerpiece a new source of creative expression.”
Elevator interior design treated as an architectural project
Otis worked with designers to create two ambiances, “natural” and “modern,” which feature four designs each.
Among the notable features, the cab interior is lit with indirect LED lighting, integrated in the cab’s four corners to provide an impression of space and depth and to highlight each material’s texture.
Natural ambiance
Inspired by early 20th-century architecture, the natural ambiance creates a harmonious connection between the elevator, hallway and lobby. Priority was given to the use of natural materials such as wood, stone and leather, combined with minimalist forms. The rounded lit corners of the cab add comfort in a space with limited dimensions.
Modern ambiance
In keeping with modern architecture, the modern designs feature materials that convey a high-tech feel and shapes that highlight the combination of metal texture and bright glossy color. This range features contrasts between the dark decorative elements and the vertical illumination. The design is sleek and efficient.
An elevator connected to the world in the core of the smart building
The new designs also feature integration of multimedia and interactive services:
- A full HD screen positioned in the control panel provides relevant information to passengers, such as news, weather and traffic.
- A smartphone app allows passengers to remotely call the elevator while walking in the building.
These design concepts can be viewed at MIPIM, the international real estate show for professionals, from March 10-13 at the UTC Building & Industrial Systems booth C21.C8. For more information about Otis products and services, visit www.otis.com or follow Otis on Twitter @OtisElevatorCo.
