Redding
Teen survives fall in Fla. elevator shaft
HOLLYWOOD, Fla., April 6 (UPI) -- Police in Florida say a 14-year-old girl survived a three-story fall down an elevator shaft while playing tag with friends at a closed shopping mall.
Officials said the girl fell 30 feet down a freight elevator shaft at the long-closed Millennium Mall in Hollywood, Fla., on Monday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
"She fell the full length, and it's well over 30 feet in depth, according to our technical rescue team," Hollywood Fire Rescue Division Chief Mark Steele said.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.
The teen is recovering well from a cut on her head and scratches on her legs, Hollywood Police Lt. Norris Redding said.
"She's out of the ICU, walking around, talking and texting," Redding said.
The mall is in compliance with city codes and the mall's owner installed gates to keep out the homeless and children, police said.
The accident appeared to be "an isolated incident," Redding said.
"The kids jumped a wall and found an unlocked door."
