FIREFIGHTERS DESCRIBE ELEVATOR RESCUE AT CALGARY TOWER
Calgary, Canada, firefighters involved in the July 12 rescue of eight people trapped in an elevator in Calgary Tower described how the rescue was pulled off in a video by 660CityNews. The incident occurred, the fire department said, when two of the elevator's six cables broke, activating the emergency brake. Kyle Landry, one of the firefighters, said he and two others got on top of the car, while a fourth firefighter got inside. "Once we got up top, we were planning all the way what our options might be to get these people out," Landry said. While the rescuer inside checked to make sure there were no medical issues, the three on top "were setting up our anchor system . . . and our harnesses to make sure that we could transfer the people from the broken elevator to the good elevator as safe as possible." While this was going on, others in the tower had to be led through stairwells down 800 steps to the bottom. West District Chief Brian Neis said most were able to get down on their own, though a few had mobility issues and had to be helped to safety. The tower has been closed for elevator repairs since the incident, and, according to a recent Calgary Herald report, no timeline has been given for its reopening.
