MANUFACTURER, MALL FOUND AT FAULT IN CHINESE FATALITY: Chinese authorities have determined a Chinese escalator manufacturer and a mall are to blame for a fatal accident on July 26 in which a woman now said to be 30 years old fell through an escalator floorplate at a mall in Jinzhou after pushing her young son to safety, South China Morning Post reports. An investigation found the plates were loose, poorly designed and poorly maintained, and that mall employees were inadequately trained to handle such accidents. Video footage has emerged showing a pair of mall employees nearly falling through a floorplate on the same mall escalator minutes before the fatality occurred. Authorities in Hubei province have halted use of all escalators made by the manufacturer in question until they are determined to be safe.
 
TWO ADDITIONAL LIFT FATALITIES IN CHINA IN SAME WEEK: Two additional women in China died in elevator accidents in the same week an escalator found to be defective claimed the life of a woman in a mall in Jingzhou on July 26. On July 27, a woman died in Wuxi City as a result of becoming stuck in the gap between a cargo lift and platform. On July 30, a 21-year-old woman died when the apartment-building elevator she was exiting in Hangzhou suddenly shot up, trapping her by the neck, South China Morning Post reports.
 
ESCALATOR INJURIES MULTIPLY IN CHINA: A member of the cleaning staff at a mall in Shanghai had a lower leg amputated as a result of an escalator accident on August 1. This was the latest in a string of injuries and fatalities involving vertical-transportation equipment in China, numerous news outlets, including stuff.com.nz, report. The man was cleaning the unit with a mop, which became entangled in a gap in the steps and entrapped his leg. It was injured so badly it was later amputated at a local hospital. On July 27, a toddler's arm became trapped in an escalator at a mall in the Guangxi region, according to the Daily Mail, and it may have to be amputated.
